Press Release
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Edward Albee’s shattering drama of marital strife, will be
presented at the Bradley Playhouse on March 30 and 31, beginning at 8:00 P.M.

Woolf, considered by many to be Albee’s masterpiece, opened in New York City on October 13,
1962, and broke new ground in contemporary American theatre with its use of realistic dialogue
and its unflinchingly candid portrayal of adult situations. It tells the story of George and Martha, a
history professor at a small New England college and the daughter of the president of the college
whose married life together has been marked by a never-ending nightmare of alcohol
consumption, accusations of inadequacy by both, and grotesque deceptions. Years of verbal and
mental abuse erupt one night in front of a young couple Martha has invited over to their house for
a nightcap after a faculty party in the early hours of the morning, resulting in the exposure of a lie
that has devastating consequences for all involved. Edward Albee’s use of adult language and his
excoriating representation of emotionally damaged people who practice falsehood in order to
avoid the ravages of truth present a unique challenge to the actor and the audience member alike.

Derek Corriveau and Carol Alderson, both veteran performers, play George and Martha. Derek has
performed with the Spirit of Broadway in Norwich, Connecticut, the Picnic Players, a summer
Shakespeare company in Pomfret, Connecticut, playing Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s
Dream,  Benedict in Much Ado About Nothing, Orsino in Twelfth Night, and has been seen on the
Bradley Stage over the past several years in such plays as Arsenic and Old Lace, Death of a
Salesman, Bus Stop, Romeo and Juliet, and Noises Off, just to name a few. Carol has also been
seen at the Bradley in such plays as Runs in the Family, Jake’s Women, Jekyll and Hyde, Wit. She
was also the director of the 2004 Halloween show I’ll Be Back Before Midnight and most recently
was the director of the play Unintelligent Design in the Bradley‘s first One Act Festival of 2006.
Along with her other Bradley credits, Carol is the co-founder of the Bradley Youth Drama Club. She
has also appeared with the Concord Players in Concord, Massachusetts in An Inspector Calls and
with the Stratton Player in Fitchburg, Massachusetts in such plays as A Gift of Murder, Arcadia,
and Pack of Lies. Travis Croce and Keri McNiff portray the young couple Nick and Honey. Travis, a
relative newcomer to the stage, has also worked with the Spirit of Broadway and was first seen
at the Bradley as Bobby in American Buffalo. Keri has done work with Break-a-Leg Productions in
Pomfret and has performed at the Bradley in Arsenic and Old Lace, Tommy, and Broadway Live
Christmas 2006. The play is directed by Thomas Moody, who has performed and directed at the
Bradley. “Working with such talented and experienced people has made my task much easier,”
Tom says. “I know that I can ask one hundred percent of them, and they give me three hundred! It
has been a true joy.”

Potential audience members should be advised that Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf contains very
explicit language and deals frankly with adult themes.
